THE GUARDIAN STORY
Liverpool Site - In the beginning
The origin of Guardian was a business trading as Graham G. Tomkins Timber Agent in 1958. In 1960 the business relocated to Orange Grove Road, Liverpool - in fact, the first industrial undertaking in that road - and the original factory building of timber was still standing until the year 2001. Within 2 years of commencement the indigenous timber agency was the largest of its type in Australia.
Hoxton Park Site
In 1960 we re-commenced our association with fibre cement in 1952 - one of our early contracts was the corrugated sheet for Maxwell House in Orange Grove Road. Fibre cement has been purchased from local and overseas world class companies. Over $100 million worth of this product has been sold since our commencement.
Lansvale Site
In 1970 we moved our factory to Hoxton Park and display to Lansvale. Lansvale display was the largest in NSW.
Over the years the activities have included:-
- Timber milling
- Building
- Joinery
- Hardware
- Timber
- Real estate
- Manufacturing
- House frames and
- Many activities associated with the building trade, not least of all garages, carports and one room additions with over 10,000 units built to the date of cessation.
From early days in our business, innovation and reworking of fibre cement has been a specialty activity of Guardian - we have cut, guillotined, laminated, shaped, joined, milled, patterned and painted product to meet special needs. Product has been supplied to every State in Australia and exported. AAC product and mouldings have recently been added to our major product range.
Minto Site #1 and #2
In the late 70's we moved to Minto. We were one of the first factories in the area and within a short time we purchased the block behind us.
Another factory was built which gave us access to Airds, Essex and Lincoln Streets.
James Hardie and Co appointed us as an exclusive distributor of pipes.
Minto Site #3
In the late 80's we purchased an 10,000 sq meter Industrial Site at Minto and custom built a 3000 sq. metre factory and admin complex to meet our growing range of products. Since development of this site over five million dollars of equipment and machinery have been installed to enable a better working environment for workers and provide a faster more accurate product for our clients.
Site work has been introduced for a range of products. This enables our customers to reduce on site labour to meet an 'on-budget' and 'on-time' situation. The teams carrying out this work have accuracy and quality control as their paramount concerns.
In 2008, we will celebrate our 50th Anniversary, however whilst we still specialise in fibre cement we now handle light weight mouldings, coatings, AAC blocks, panels and fibre composite products. We are further developing an export market for manufactured products and now have distributors in all states.
Queensland Site 1
In the early 90's we opened another store a Geebung. We became a Distributor for James Hardie similiar to our NSW store. Steve Tinworth was appointed Manager and now owns this store.
Following the closure of the Building Information Centre at Homebush, the company purchased a property in Pennant Hills Rd Carlingford where an Architect was engaged to create a temporary home display featuring the range of products we make and sell.
Guardian Building Products captures many innovative concepts in the market place and our motto is - "Shaping New Ideas".
